Journey into Freedom …. Fr. Peter McVerry

Journey into Freedom
Leading Social Justice Campaigner in Tallaght
Leading social justice campaigner, Fr. Peter McVerry, will lead a presentation in the
series, Journey into Freedom, this Spring as the parishes of Old Bawn and
Bohernabreena reach out to the people of Tallaght.
Stories of Hope will be shared over six weeks from early March to encourage
people to better understand the influence of God’s presence in their often very busy
lives, and to lead to freedom of spirit.
Fr. Peter McVerry, a powerful advocate for those who have no voice, will
discuss the meaning of faith for him in his work on behalf of the homeless.
Showband star Eileen Reid and former All Ireland winning Dublin Footballer
Ger Brennan will also share testimony as it relates to the worlds of entertainment
and sport. This series of presentations will lead conversations around some of the
biggest issues in society and look at the role God can play to support families,
individuals and community through the challenges faced in modern times.
Parish Priest, Fr. Michael Hurley, said “the aim of this Journey into Freedom
is to present stories of hope from people who are engaged in the work of justice
today and from those who have come through traumatic situations to a new
awakening to God’s love and providence. The series will encourage all who are
searching: whether they have faith or think that their trust in God is non-existent.”
Organiser Geraldine Massey sees this series ‘as an effort to include everyone,
and as an invitation to hear stories of hope from people who will certainly inspire
us. I hope that people will know that God’s love is for all as we easily give up hope
when we don’t get what we want when we want it.’.
This Journey into Freedom series will also hear stories of hope, e.g. Hilary
McCann on healing from cancer; as well as stories from Kelly Spellman, and
student James Cannon.
The presentations will be held in St. Maelruain’s Primary School (Snr.), Old
Bawn Avenue, Tallaght at 8.00pm over six weeks starting on March 11th.
Further sessions will be held on March 19th, 25th, April 1st, 8th and 15th.
The series also features an evening of reflection and an exploration around how we
can best support each other in living our everyday lives to our fullest potential.
