Scripture Notes – Sunday – 17th October 2021

For the Son of Man himself did not come to be served but to serve!

The Gospel addresses in a very engaging way a constant risk/temptation: the imitation of the power structures of the world. Hierarchy does not come form higher-arch but you could be forgiven for thinking it might. As Jesus bluntly says: not so among you!

The former and slightly maverick bishop of Evreux, Jacques Gaillot, wrote a book with a pungent title: A church that does not serve, serves for nothing (Eine Kirche die nicht dient dient zu nichts). For his efforts, Gaillot was made titular bishop of Pertenia and then set up a virtual diocese without frontiers.

Some inspiration

Pope Francis on the joy of discipleship: here.

For a prayerful reflection, I suggest Goldberg variation 25 played by Glenn Gould (the visuals — and the occasional humming — are a little distracting but the playing is sublime).

Wishing you all the blessing of God this autumn,
