Scripture Notes – Sunday 25th October 2020

On these two commandments hang the whole Law, and the Prophets also.   Dear friends,  A very warm welcome to all to Hearers of the Word for Sunday, 25 October 2020. Our context today is the on-going crisis triggered by the pandemic. How can we find energy for continued solidarity, unselfishness and resilience? Is there a Christian approach, even, to this very testing time? If you were asked to describe what sustains you…

Next Sunday is Mission Sunday in the Catholic tradition. Accordingly, two sets of notes are provided for the Sunday to accommodate communities not observing Mission Sunday. In fact, only the Gospel is different. This email is slightly longer than usual because…

Scripture Notes – Sunday 4th October 2020

It was the stone rejected by the builders that became the keystone.   Dear friends,  A very warm welcome to all to Hearers of the Word for Sunday, 4 October 2020. 1.Supersessionism and complacency Today’s parable of the wicked tenants conceals two traps for contemporary Christian readers. The first of these is “supersessionism,” the idea that the Christian faith replaces and renders inoperative (somehow) the Jewish faith. This is clearly condemned in Catholic teaching. See…

Scripture Notes – Sunday 20th September 2020

“Have I no right to do what I like with my own? Why be envious because I am generous?” Dear friends,  A very warm welcome to all to Hearers of the Word. 1. Matthew and God’s sovereign grace Even a cursory reading of Matthew will reveal the emphasis he places on the practical living of the Gospel. In this, he shares something with the letter of James: perhaps both a struggling with Paul’s emphasis on the…

Scripture Notes – Sunday 13th September 2020

Forgive your brother and sister from your heart. Matthew and forgiveness Matthew’s teaching on reconciliation, forgiveness and correction is rich, many-sided and down-to-earth. Last Sunday’s gospel on correction is juxtaposed with today’s super-clear parable about the unforgiving servant. Rather than leave it there, Matthew’s clarifies the already abundantly clear message with the alarming observation: This is how my Heavenly Father will deal with you if you do not forgive your brother and sister from your heart. In…

Meditation – 9th February 2020

The Deep End – This little light of mine…. This little light of mine, I’m gonna let it shine! Perhaps you are familiar with this popular hymn. It is often used in children’s liturgies, and was in fact written as a gospel song for children in the 1920s. It later became something of an anthem for the Civil Rights Movement of the 1950s and 60s, associated in particular with civil rights…

Meditation – 16th September 2018

The Deep End -‘I, by my works, will show you my faith’ ‘What good is it, my brothers and sisters, if you say you have faith but do not have works?’ These are the words of St. James in the second reading today, and in the gospel Jesus speaks quite sternly to Peter: ‘The way you think is not God’s way but man’s…’ This is a reminder for us all…

Pope Francis on Abortion and the Right to Life

Pope Francis on Abortion and the Right to Life “Among the vulnerable for whom the Church wishes to care with particular love and concern are unborn children, the most defenceless and innocent among us. Nowadays efforts are made to deny them their human dignity and to do with them whatever one pleases, taking their lives and passing laws preventing anyone from standing in the way of this. … Precisely because…
