Ecumenical Bible Week and Scripture Notes

Vision 2020: Faith into the Future Dear friends,  The great cycle of feasts from Advent to Pentecost, celebrating the great events of salvation, has come to an end. With the feast of the Holy Trinity, the invitation is to pause, to catch our breath, to contemplate. Viewed externally, this is a “doctrinal” feast. Viewed internally — chiefly from the point of view of the readings — the feast invites us an experience of relationship, an extraordinary relationship…

Online Novena to the Sacred Heart

Dear friends,  The Jesuits in Gardiner St (Dublin) have asked me to give the talks for the novena to the Sacred Heart this year. I was delighted to be asked and am preparing the material now. The novena has a title: “Is your heart in the right place?”. The talks are all based on passages from Luke’s Gospel and have titles such as, A listening heart A compassionate heart A…

If you know someone who might be interested, please let them…

Scripture Notes

Dear friends,  The feast of Pentecost has many layers and there is much to reflect on and to learn for today. Religious festivals most often have agricultural roots, in rhythm with nature, and this is pre-eminently true of the Jewish feast of Pentecost. The later wheat harvest suggests “in-gathering”, a theme which serves Luke’s purpose in Acts 2:1-13. As well as that, religious feasts often “accrue” extra meanings and this also happened for Pentecost/Shavuot which came to be associated…

Trócaire Campaign – Make Your Box Count

Trócaire Campaign – Make Your Box Count   Dear Parishioners, I hope this email finds you and yours safe and well during these challenging times. Pentecost is linked closely with Easter and with Trócaire’s mission. ‘You shall receive power … and you will be my witnesses’ (Acts 1:8). As the disciples received their mission to go out and share the Good News, we in Trócaire are missioned by the Irish Church…

Vision 2020: Faith into the Future

Vision 2020: Faith into the Future Dear friends,  It was pointed out that some links in this week’s general email were linked to the wrong resources. There was also a bit of confusion of Easter 7A20 and Ascension. The website has been adjusted and below are the corrected links. Before going there, if you are thinking of registering for the Summer School, the time to do that is now. When you register, send me an email…

A suggestion for May – the month of Mary.

A suggestion for May – the month of Mary. Do you remember the May altars of our childhood?.. I got into trouble on more than one occasion as I thought it made perfect sense to cut the neighbour’s prized flowers for the May altar at home or in school. Perhaps we could encourage the little people in our lives (whether they live with us or not) to create their own…

Meditation – 9th February 2020

The Deep End – This little light of mine…. This little light of mine, I’m gonna let it shine! Perhaps you are familiar with this popular hymn. It is often used in children’s liturgies, and was in fact written as a gospel song for children in the 1920s. It later became something of an anthem for the Civil Rights Movement of the 1950s and 60s, associated in particular with civil rights…

Meditation – 16th September 2018

The Deep End -‘I, by my works, will show you my faith’ ‘What good is it, my brothers and sisters, if you say you have faith but do not have works?’ These are the words of St. James in the second reading today, and in the gospel Jesus speaks quite sternly to Peter: ‘The way you think is not God’s way but man’s…’ This is a reminder for us all…

Pope Francis on Abortion and the Right to Life

Pope Francis on Abortion and the Right to Life “Among the vulnerable for whom the Church wishes to care with particular love and concern are unborn children, the most defenceless and innocent among us. Nowadays efforts are made to deny them their human dignity and to do with them whatever one pleases, taking their lives and passing laws preventing anyone from standing in the way of this. … Precisely because…

“Our churches are closed. Our CHURCH is not” Dear Parishioners, unfortunately all our churches will remain closed during the current restrictions. They will not be open for private prayer, but our community, our hearts, our lives continue to be open and that is the heart of Church – the people of God. Fr. Pat McKinley & Parish Team
